A schedule of pep band performances will be posted in the fall so that work schedules and personal schedules can be cleared. Each student enrolled in the jazz band class is required to attend pep band performances. These set performances will be part of the required jazz band activities. Students need to report to pep band performances at 6:00 PM and will stay until the end of the varsity game or at the director’s discretion. Pep band performances are limited to no more than one performance per week. Occasionally, pep band performances take place at pep rallies during the school day. All jazz band students are required to participate in these also. These are very limited in number, usually no more than one pep assembly per grading period. The pep band plays a wide variety of music from class rock and roll to jazz and the group has been quite popular with the student body and audience members. Jazz band is available for all students through audition only and instrumentation is at the discretion of the director. All participants must be members of the concert/marching band program in order to audition. Rehearsal is held during the school day as a jazz band class. The group is quite active throughout the year in various competitions and contests. The Jazz Band competes in 2-3 contests each year and participates in several concerts during the year. The Jazz Band also performs as the pep band for high school winter athletic events. Auditions for this group are held at any time there are positions open in the jazz band. Rules regarding attendance, tardiness to rehearsal and performance are established each year and followed closely. This group also participates in concerts, contests and other performance opportunities. The jazz program at Abraham Lincoln High School is the host site for two jazz band contests each year. The first being the Iowa High School Music Association Jazz Band and Swing Choir Contest held in January and the Bluffs Jazz Festival in February.
